The Black Data Sovereignty Project

The Black Data Sovereignty Project is CanAfro Research Institute’s community’s answer. This transformative initiative creates Canada’s first national data ecosystem to systematically track, analyze, and combat anti-Black hate. They end the data void that enables institutions to ignore the realities. By collecting verified data from news monitoring, public reports, and a secure community portal, they transform lived experience into undeniable evidence. CanAfro Research Institute translates this data into actionable tools including public dashboards, government policy briefs, and advocacy kits for Black-led organizations. This directly empowers communities to secure funding, design targeted programs, and demand institutional accountability. The project provides universities with ethical datasets for critical research while serving as a pioneering model for global Black diasporic communities. Ultimately, this initiative establishes data sovereignty as a fundamental tool for liberation, ensuring every Black person in Canada can live with the dignity and respect they deserve by utilizing evidence for systemic change.
